Build-a-Bear/Shriners Hospital for Children 2010

Last year the Collegiate DECA Shriner Hospital/Build-a-Bear Service Project was so successful that we decided to make it an annual event. Our original goal in 2009 was 75 bears, and in the end, 174 bears went to children who are patients at Shriners Hospital for Children. This year our goal was 200 bears. It was an ambitious goal, but we knew we could do it. Collegiate DECA, with the help of SLCC faculty, staff, and other student organizations, including Student Life and Leadership, the Psychology Club, the Hispanic Club, and the Asian Club collected $3,300 in donations. Even Grisbee, from the Utah Grizzlies Hockey Team, joined in the efforts.

We gathered at the Fashion Place Mall Build-a-Bear on December 4 to make the toys.  We were joined by children from Shriners Hospital, the SLCC Bruins mascot, local El Kalah Shriners, and many other students from the previously mentioned organizations.  Everyone pitched in to stuff toys and make a special wish for each of the Shriners' children as we gave each toy a heart.  Fox 13 News was there to report on the excitement.

On December 15, 2010, we delivered 406 toys to Shriners Hospital with the help of the SLCC Bruins mascot. Children who are patients at the hospital gathered excitedly in the lobby to receive a special friend.  The smiles on their faces made every minute of hard work worth it.

This monumental result couldn't have been achieved without those of you who donated your money and time! Even the change in your pocket made a difference. A big thank you also to the faculty members and our families who supported us. Finally, thank you to Shriners Hospital for being what you are and for helping children!
